    Mr Kunston

I tried to telephone you last night to report on the matter we agreed I would discuss with our elected representatives.

As you will recall, we felt the social boundaries in our fair suburb were being unduly blurred and we were to push for restrictive covenants being placed on “Workingmens cottages.”

In our last meeting the RAMV resolved that henceforth, and in order to maintain the cultural authenticity of Mt Victoria, only bonafide members of the working class be permitted to purchase one of these dwellings. Proof of membership of a union would be required.

I got an excellent hearing from the councillors. While they were sympathetic, they pointed out some flaws in our proposal. In particular, one councillor asked what unions were acceptable. I, of course replied “the usual ones”, meaning dock workers, seamen, tramways staff and employees at the local abbotoir. But apparently, there is this thing called the PSA, which is a very popular union amongst some in our suburb.

This sparked an intense debate in the council about whether these people were “professionals” or “workers”. Some felt they matched neither category.

I am now confused. Your guidance is sought.
